Viv & Danny

|
Last night was Viv and Danny's Big Day. Okay, maybe not exactly the big day. The wedding was on 27th December. Last night was the reception. Second big day, perhap.

Well, last night went smoothly. Maybe there were a some minor technical problem, but nothing huge. I was one of the bridesmaid along with, Fit Elena & Farha. I'm not going to tell you about the rehearsal, but I'll tell you about the main event. Our MC was Datuk Mahadzir Lokman (I'm not sure whether I spelled his name correctly). He's the best MC in Malaysia. We were able to get him in a short time, because he's my mum childhood bestfriend. And he is somewhat related to the groom, Danny. So, of course he'll make time off his busy schedule for this event. The man has standard. Really, he knows the protocol very well. Telling us how to do it the right way. He expect everything to go smoothly, not even a minor delay is acceptable. Last night, he called for dinner. But Sutera Harbour's management didn't come out with the food on cue. Instead, they waited about a minute, because their background song was not ready yet. Mahadzir (or Dale as my mum calls him) signalled the manager to just go and serve the food for a few times, but he ignored him. Well, Uncle Dale went over to scold him for "ruining the event". And it was just a minute delay.
Oh sorry, I should have tell you from the beginning of the event. Guests started to arrive around 6.30 p.m. The bridesmaids and some of the relatives have to escort the guests to their respectives tables. There were some technical problems here due to about half of the guests didn't confirm their attendance. So, their names weren't on the list, and we have to find seats for them. Luckily we had 4 reserved tables standby, because we sort of expected this to happen. It was a bit chaotic at some points, because even the 4 reserved tables were full, and there were some mixups with the names. If the guests confirmed their attendance, it'll be MUCH easier. My name was on the invitation card as one of the person to call to to RSVP, but for 2 weeks, only 12 people called. Out of 500 invited guests. Imagine that. Ha-ha. I didn't know how many has called to confirm to Auntie Noni, thou. But I'm sure it's triple the number that called me, possibly more.
After finding the guests their seats, the bridesmaids rushed to the Bride's holding room, it's time to escort the bride and groom. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention what was the bridesmaids wearing. There were four of us, Fit and I wore turqoise blue while Elena and Farha wore fuschia orange. Viv provided the material for us. So we were matching, but with different design. Intan and Farhan wore lime green baju kebaya and baju melayu respectively, they were the best man and maid of honor. Viv and Danny wore green too, but in different shade. For their first appearance, they wore something traditional. Danny with his keris, baju melayu, sampin and songkok. Vivienti with her lacey dress to match with Danny. For the entrance, Cerys, the flowergirl, in white dress and Meldon (the flowerboy?), in a tuxedo walked side by side, followed by the bridesmaids in orange and blue, escorting the King and Queen (or empress for Viv's case) while the best man and maid of honor followed behind them. There were kompang outside of the ballroom, but as soon as Viv and Danny entered the room and was under the arch of white roses, Datuk Mahadzir announces their arrival, and the kompang stopped, replaced by the band's slow music. It was beautiful, the whole room was focusing on them. They looked gorgeous in their clothes. Cerys was (throwing?) rose petals on the red carpet. Meldon looked adorable yet dashing in his tuxedo; the bridesmaids were all dressed up holding a bouquet of roses each.On the pelamin, the bride and groom sat on their seats, while Farhan and Intan standing beside them dutifully. Even the bridesmaids were duduk bersimpuh on the pelamin. Farha and I on the left; Elena and Fitriah on the right. The bridesmaids were assigned to give the bunga telor to those who merenjis the bride and groom. Those who were on the list to merenjis was: the guests of honor; the groom's granduncle and his wife; the bride's granduncle and wife; the bride and groom's parents.
After the merenjis, the VVIP were taken to the main table to have their dinner with the bride and groom. When we're about to leave the pelamin, Fitriah got a foot cramp for sitting bersimpuh for a long time during the merenjis. Luckily, this time the bride and groom was leading the pack, so it didn't interrupt the event much. And we manage to catch up. You should have seen her, trying so hard to smile and cover the pain, and go on with the plan. Anyway, while the guests were enjoying their dinner, they were entertained with cultural dances by Sabah Cultural Board. There were also shown some videos footage from merisik, engagement and wedding day. Not forgetting the picture slide show of Danny and Viv from their childhood to their dating days, co-created by Nikola, Danny's sister.

Before Viv and Danny leave the room to change their dressings, there were speeches by the representatives from both side of the family. My dad for the bride's; Dr Faizal for the groom's. Dr Faizal was telling about how Danny persuaded him to be the representatives. How Danny became the man that he is. Danny's family blood ties with Dato' Onn Jaafar. As soon as the speeches were done, Datuk Mahadzir announced the bride and groom's departure.
While Viv and Danny, alongside with Intan and Farhan, went to change their dressup from traditional Malay into tuxedos and dresses. Aunti Noni and Uncle Jamal mingle with the guests. Meldon was on stage singing a song from Jonas Brothers "When You Look Me In The Eyes". He was playing the guitar on his own, not nervous at all. During the rehearsal, Viv, Uncle Jamal & Intan cried when he sang. The boy is all grown up now. No longer the same cheeky little Meldon. He's a pretty boy now.I'm not sure what happening afterward, because I went out to the Bride and Groom holding room. I think Azean was singing a song. The bridesmaids had to escort the King and Queen of the night for a second entrance after the guests had their dessert. Instead of heading to the pelamin, this time we headed to the cake, for the cake cutting ceremony. After the cake-cutting, we headed to the dance floor for the first dance. Josh was singing while Danny and Viv ballroom danced, joined in a minute later by Farhan and Intan, with 3 other couples which includes Elena and Farha. When the song is done, all the dancers bowed down to the audiences. Josh continued on singing his version of "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" while Viv and Danny take their seats at the VVIP table.
Just when I thought my job is done for the night, Mum called me in to join in the Poco Poco. Luckily, it was a hit with the Datuks and Datins. So, the dance floor was crowded by us, and I wasn't so embarrassed. Thou, I think I've ruined my dress by stepping on my train every time I took a step back during the dance. Poco Poco was the marker that the event was ending. After the announcement made by Datuk Mahadzir, the bride and groom, closest family of the bride and groom, the best man and the maid of honor lined up at the arch of white roses to thank the guests for coming. It ended around 11 o'clock at night.
Afterward, the immediate family and friends still stuck around to take some pictures. Viv even throw her bouquet. And guess who got it? Cerys, the cheeky 9 years old niece of ours. Ha-ha. Then, the youngsters went to the Bridal Suite for the after party. Well, they planned on partying all night, but since it was Sunday, most night hangout spot are closing early. So, instead, they just ordered some drinks, play cards, and enjoy the rest of their night.
It was definitely a beautiful wedding. When will be my turn? Maybe in 10-15 years. Ha-ha.

p/s : Sorry, still haven't got the official pictures from the photographers. These pictures is from our friends and family's digital camera. Or in other word, I took the link from their Facebook album. Ha-ha.
