I'm back

The vacation is over, I'm back in my hometown of Kota Kinabalu.

*long and deep sigh*

Don't get me wrong, I love Kota Kinabalu, I love Malaysia. I'm one of those people who can get a little defensive (okay, maybe sometimes a little TOO defensive) about the city I grew up in. You know, when some obnoxious Peninsular Malaysian start making rude and ignorant remarks about it. Or other foreigners. Like "Oh, Isn't Sabah the poorest state in Malaysia?". The worst of all, "Aren't Sabahans (or Borneons) live on trees?" and they were serious. I usually reply, "Yes, but it's the monsoon seasons, so we're not taking our chances with the weather, especially with the parabola on top of our house. So, during these time, we have to settle for the 2-story bungalow, instead. *grunt* Oh well, at least we could maintain the elevator and lifts in the treehouse in the mean time."

Still, I have to admit that I was reluctant to return here. You would to, if you were put in my shoes. It's the environment. It's a vacation: no responsibilities, no deadlines, no worries. Who, in the right state of mind, would want to end that?

Not me, of course! (Especially when there's dashing guys with charming accent and fine arse in the picture! Gosh, I miss them already!)

We reached Kota Kinabalu around midnight. After unpacking the massive loads of luggage, I pretty much passed on my bed till 6pm the next day. Yes, I was asleep for 18 hours. If my tummy didn't make so much noise, I'd probably still be asleep for another couple of hours. Jetlag.

That was 12 hours ago. I'm still awake since then, and its 6am now.

I'm turning nocturnal.

Women's Day Bazaar

I just came back from my aunt's place and I found out another bazaar is taking place this month.

Wow, I didn't realised there's so many events actually going on in our sleepy town of Kota Kinabalu. I guess its just a matter of knowing where and when to find them.

According to her, a women organization which she is involved in (I couldn't be sure whether it is SWEPA, PUSPANITA or PENIAGANITA) has invited to be one of the honorary guest for the launching of the bazaar which is held in conjunction with the Women's Day.

Unfortunately, she has to decline as she won't be in town at that time.

From the conversation, it is said that there will be a lot of stalls being set up. Over 50 lucky draws will be given away. And there'll be a 4KM "1Malaysia Family Walk". I'm sure with such activities being planned, there will be entertainments too.

Women all over Kota Kinabalu. This event is for you!
Date: Saturday, 21 November 2009
Time: 07:30 - 17:00
Location: WISMA WANITA, KM3.5, Jalan Tuaran (near SM. Kian Kok,Likas)

Don't forget to mark your calendar!

P.S. : If only I will be in town that day.

Reason #8

I'm always traveling here and there. Always saying I want to further my studies as far as possible. But like what they say, there's no place like home.

Kota Kinabalu is home. And I love this city. Why?

The traffic

It's has almost been two years since I had my driving licence. Ever since, I had consumed (unwillingly) the role of a driver for my mom, and sometimes, my friends and relatives. At first, of course I didn't mind, I was so happy being able to drive around on my own.

But then, I spent almost a month in Kuala Lumpur in mid 2008, while waiting for my SPM results. Of course, I was still a sweet law-binding driver then, who excitedly offer to drive for her brothers and sister. They, without any hesitance, gave their car keys to me. Little that I know, driving in KL can be so cruel and soul-crushing. (That's right! Soul-crushing!). The drivers, oh those maniac drivers, have no mercy to freshly graduated driver like me. My sister and brothers were tormenting and urging me to get a move on. But I can't even get the car out of the junction near our apartment in KL.

Not just those maniac drivers in KL wouldn't give me any chance, regardless my signal indicating I want to pass through, they even gave me some rude signals themselves. If you're good at lipreading, you probably can guess what they were saying to you too. And they aren't saying anything nice! It was a traumatizing experience, but I got over it. I even manage to adapt to their style of driving.

Oh, I almost forgot. The traffic jam. And I don't mean a musical remix to listen to in traffic. I'm referring to the traffic congestion. In KL, you better know when is the peak hours, and which roads to avoid during certain time of the day. Or else, you'd be stuck in a traffic jam that will take minimum one hour of your time! (And that's on a good day.) In Kota Kinabalu, if you happen to be in a jam, it will take maximum 1 hour. Even that people already start complaining.

Another thing I love about KK's traffic is, you'll hardly get lost. Unless, of course, if you wander into the rural areas. Check out the map of the city at the top of this post. Yes, that's all. How could you get lost in KK? In KL, that's a different story. The building will be just next to you, but you will find it difficult to find the entry way. And if you miss your junction, oh boy, you have to go all the way to the end, just to turn around.

In KK, I wouldn't mind to drive. (Still, its good if I can get a driver.) But in KL? I'd rather walk 15 minutes to the LRT station and make several station changes than driving in a congested road full of maniacs, pay high priced tolls and parkings (IF you can get a parking spot.)

And this, ladies and gentlemen, why I love Kota Kinabalu.

Flea Market

I love watching home improvement or makeover shows on TV. Especially those that are challenged to do in a very specific and tight budget and time. The designers will tend to be innovative and creative, by finding cheap and bargain items in flea markets or yard sales and start to improving them and using them in a way that sometimes our simple minds couldn't think of.

After watching those shows, I will always complaint to mom that there's no flea market in Kota Kinabalu, only rombengan that sells bundles of (used?) clothes. Some other usual complaint by me is "Why is there any flea markets or yard sales in KK?" "We have to buy everything in retail price!" or "Gaya Street is not flea market as they mostly sell handicraft."

Yes, yes. I know. I complains. A lot.

Good news! There'll be a bazaar/flea market in Kota Kinabalu! And it's going to be indoor, which means fully airconded!

It is said that it will be like the flea markets I always see on TV. Well, not as elaborate and huge. It is just starting out, so the stalls are limited. But that's good enough for me! And the products will be at bargain price, that is what important!

I'm aware I sounded like one of those moms that hunt for discount coupons and bargains but I don't care.

I don't expect to see furniture yet. But I expect to find clothes, accessories, plants, food and artworks.

Oh, did I mention my friend will be there too? He'll be promoting his photography, design and print business, InsideArts.

The bazaar will be held on 14 & 15 November, at the Ground Floor, Lintas Station, Lintas Plaza. Kota Kinabalu people has to know where this is. If not, you need to revoke your citizenship. It is the same building as RHB Bank and 7-Eleven, and in the same area as Yo-Yo Cafe & Salim Restaurant.

Darn, I'm so excited that I can't focus on my revision for my exams!

2nd Borneo International Trade Fair (BITF)

I first know about this event from my cousin, who is one of the designer for one of local's HipHop streetwear, LSW, which will be one of the participant of Mini-XHBT: Sabah Creative Cluster in BIFT.

I've always been an exhibition-goer. Started by being dragged by mom, now the roles reversed. Why? I'm not sure. Maybe because I like to know what's new with today's market. Maybe its the promotion and special showcasing. Maybe I just like the crowds. I couldn't tell for sure.

What I do know is, BIFT is a must-go in my list. It is a platform that will showcase the Sabah State Government's ongoing efforts in the implementation of the Sabah Development Corridor (SDC) as a thrust to spur investments and developments on the promoted sectors under the SDC which are agriculture, tourism, logistic services and manufacturing. Participants that are expected in this event include companies from China, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, Phillipines, Brunei, Vietnam, Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia and other countries. Oh, just imagine what we can find there: the food, the product, the culture. Best of all, the promotions! (Especially on the last day of the event)

I'm particularly interested on the Mini-XHBT: Sabah Creative Cluster. Sabahan entrepreneur and talents are gathered to showcase their artworks in various creative fields (music, fashion, photography, graphic design, paintings, films and CGIs). They are introducing Street Arts to the crowds. Now this is more like it. Finally, something that encourage entrepreneurial skills to youngsters to boost their talents and love in the creative industry.

Among the activities that you could engage in MINI-XHBT are short film screening, fashion shows by aspiring local young entrepreneurs and Fashion Design students, and Street Art demonstrations such as mini-acoustic performance, silkscreen T-shirt printing demonstration and mini-grafitti demonstration.

Surely, after knowing this, you don't want to miss out. So, the schedules are as follows:

EXHIBITION
Date: 13th – 16th Nov, 2009
Time: 9.00 am – 9.00 pm
Venue: Likas Sports Complex Exhibition Hall

STREET ART DEMONSTRATION
Date: 13th – 16th Nov, 2009
Time: 9.00 am – 9.00 pm
Venue: Likas Sports Complex Exhibition Hall

FASHION SHOW
Date: 13th – 16th Nov, 2009
Time: 2.00 pm & 4.30 pm
Venue: Likas Sports Complex Main Hall

See you there!

For more info, go to BIFT or LSW official website.

Photographer For Hire

As you may know, a very good friend of mine, Kristine Emmanoelle (or Krissy to the close circle) had shown her interest in photography. Ever since she got her Canon DSLR camera for her 20th birthday, she's been playing with her baby (yes, she calls her camera "baby"). From ants to buildings and people, she's been making the moment permanent through the shots of her camera. Capturing the moment has become her obsession. She wants to bottle up the emotions through the lens of camera so that she can share it with everyone and make the moments last.

Now, she wants to capture that special moments in your life, so that you too can look back and reminisce the good times that you had.

Here's some sample of her works. All the models are her friends and family, willingly pose so that Krissy can sharpen her skills and sense with the lens.

For RM100 for a session, you have the privillage of enjoying Krissy's touch in photography. She'll gives you the best 50 shots in a CD, so that you can your favorite, and print them any amount you like. Her package is negotiable, of course.

For any questions or information regarding Krissy's service, you may contact her directly through her mobile number (+60195851681), her e-mail (awkward_lines@yahoo.com) or her blog. You can also submit any inquiries through me, I'd be happy to help.

Oh, don't forget that we're based in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. So, if you're somewhere outside of KK city, and wants her service, we have to negotiate the transportation.

You can check out more of her works at her photoblog or Flickr.

Ka'amatan

The word Ka'amatan is derived from the root word 'tomot', a Kadazandusun term for harvest. Thus, Ka'amatan refers to the paddy-harvesting period, which involves a series of traditional rituals culminating finally to the Ka'amatan Festival.

Over the years, the Ka'amatan Festival has evolved and transformed into an epitome expression of the multi-cultural souls of the indigenous peoples of Sabah. Through the month of May, Ka'amatan celebrations are held annually at the family, village, district and State levels.

Kota Kinabaly City Tadau Ka'amatan Carnival 2009 will be held 14-16 May 2009 at Lintasan Deasoka (Gaya Street), Kota Kinabalu. The 3 days district level celebrations is organized by the Dewan Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu (DBKK) and activities are planned.

Umobile booth will be at booth #43, which is allocated directly in front of Pizza Hut. It's a festival; all of you have to come and join me. After all, the more the merrier! I can promise you that Umobile's booth will be the most happening, most fun, and cheerful booth on the block! There will be big bikes for shows, too!

I hope to see you there, and be sure to wear orange clothing, if possible.

Why Bali when you're already in Sabah?

I'm not writing about how Bali is much better than Sabah. In contrast, I'm writing why you should use your expense for your vacation in Sabah instead of any other islands or beaches in other places.

Don't get me wrong, I'm no different with you. I wanted to go to Bali. In fact, if it wasn't due to the swine flu (or Influenza A, as they want us to call it), I'd be packing for Intan's birthday gateway to Bali right this moment. To be honest, I'm still very upset about it. 5 days in Bali sans the parents. Only me & Intan, and a couple of friends. We'd be able to do anything we want (as long as our budget covers it, of course!) I was looking forward for it, it would be my first trip outside Malaysia without the parents. Ah, the freedom I longed for. Then, the pigs came a long and stomp on my hopes and dreams. How easily a dream can shatter.

Well, I'm not letting one small bump on the road ruin everything. If I can't go to Bali, I'll bring Bali to me. I'd make my own Bali-like experience right here in Sabah. Bali is an island, Sabah is surrounded by islands and the sea. How much different can it be? I probably can do much more here than in Bali. In addition, if I'm running out of budget, I can always run home and ask the parents for extra. (Well, in theory. I'm sure they are not keen on that idea.)

Like any other typical Sabahan, I was skeptical with my own idea. (Yes, my minds was arguing among themselves.) "Oh gosh, Sabah? But there's nothing here! Literally, nothing!" Well, it turns out, we're not doing a good job being a Sabahan. There's a lot we can do in Sabah. But (yes, there's a but) we just can't be expected to do it as the activities in Sabah are mostly outdoorsy and suitable for adrenaline junkie. Or they're more to cultural activities.

Anyway, I did a little research. After all, I need to present this to the parents so they'll approve on both; permission to go without them and the budget required. Obviously, they'll be impressed with my idea. But that still won't confirm that they'll agree to sponsor it. Never mind the budget, I can fork it out of my own account. The main problem is, getting their approval for me to go. The demerits of being the youngest is, the parents will be most protective of you. As if they are not overprotective and overbearing enough.
I always have a thing for beaches. So, it is predictable for me to search for a place surrounded by beach in Sabah. Which is pretty easy thing to do, and too many options to choose. What kind of a fool couldn't find a beach in Sabah? We're surrounded by them! So, since I live in Kota Kinabalu, I shortlisted the options to Tunku Abdul Rahman Park. The marine park is a cluster of islands comprising Pulau Gaya, Pulau Sapi, Pulau Manukan, Pulau Mamutik and Pulau Sulug. All only 10-20 minutes speedboat ride from the city.
Honestly, I do not know how to choose between the islands. They're all the same to me. And I'm sure they offer all the same services and activities. And I've only been to Pulau Manukan before, and that was a long while back. So, I list down everything that I, I meant, we want to do during the trip. Water sports (scuba diving, parasailing, banana boat, ...), overnight stay, bird watching, BBQ, photography (I'm not forgetting you, Krissy.) and whatever the island has to offer, we're up for it (just after we check with our wallet.) And when it comes to this, the Internet is not helpful at all. They only show the boat schedule, and the main attractions of the islands; but there's nothing about the rates, which is the most important in our budget planning.
I think I will choose to go to Pulau Sapi instead of the other four. Simply because I never been there; it has amazing texture of rocks around its beach; there's 5 kilometres of nature trails; and during low tide, we can walk to Pulau Gaya. Oh, no forgetting the most recorgnizable and well-known celebrity on the island, the giant monitor lizards. Usually they are ferocious carnivorous hunters, but it seems the lot on the island has gotten very tame, fat and lazy. Interesting! There's macaque monkeys, too! Imagine Krissy trying to get close and take pictures of them. She jumped across the room because she spotted a cockroach before. Is she going to jump across the island?
Since the Internet is not giving more information that I needed and wanted, I guess I have to do things the old fashion way: go to the main office and ask. Darn. I guess virtual reality is not everything. I'll keep you posted. Wish me luck on getting approval from the parents!

A Day With Mum

It's Sunday. Of course, I spent it with Mum. My Sunday is Mum's day. The reason I'm still stuck in Kota Kinabalu; so that I can accompany her. So, at least I have to spare a day for her. It's not like I have any other choice.

My mum is in property development. She rarely miss any exhibition or seminar relating to it. There's IPEX, which I think stands for Internation Property Exhibition, in Sabah Trade Centre. It's boring, of course. But I'm used to it. Thanks to Mum. As usual, we took every brochure from every booth. Mum's research data of the competitors. I think it's bloody pointless anyway. Because Mum probably going to refer them for one month only, then she'll put them in the corner of her office, and let them collect dust.Well, there's one interesting thing there. The Edible Architecture Contest. It actually exist in Sabah, let alone Malaysia. I thought I'll only be able to see them online through the monitor of my laptop. Or when I visit a western country. Let me show you some of the pictures of the creation by Malaysian students. Can you believe the first prize is RM 1500.00!? Wow! And some of these "buildings" are actually pretty impressive, and similar to the real ones. And 100% edible. Well, I'm not sure about the edible part. But they're 100% made of food products.
Spagetti Eiffel Tower

We're not sure what this Eiffel Tower made of. Crackers?

Crackers, Jelly, Carrots, Dough, Candy & others Taj Mahal.

Licorice, Candies, Crackers, Jellies Beijing Bird Nest.

Cracker London Bridge. Look pretty rundown to me. Remind me of the song, "London Bridge is Falling Down".

Crackers & Grain Pyramid.

These are only some of them. You don't expect me to take pictures of all of them using my camera phone. Did you?

Heavy Rain

Last night, there were a heavy rain pouring down Kota Kinabalu. With lightning flashing every minute. Flooding the streams and rivers. Even the stream opposite Queen Elizabeth Hospital was almost flooding into the main road. It was pouring so heavy that I couldn't see the road when I was driving. I have never experienced rain this heavy. Probably this is what they call 'Storm'. Well, if not, it is close enough.

Anyway, I was suppose to go back to the campus last night. Because my first class today started at 8am. I didn't want to wake up an hour earlier and rush to class. I rather spend the night in campus. Well, since it was raining heavily, I didn't.

What I did was, stayed in Viv's place until the rain ease off. Yeah, I forgot to mention that I was with Viv and her family during the rain. I was there to send Intan's photo album. Viv wants to borrow some pictures of her during their childhood. Apparently, she didn't capture much photos during her childhood because she was an ugly kid. (She was not ugly, but just not a cute kid. But look how gorgeous she turn out to be! A real life ugly duckling.) She needed them for the slides. For her wedding reception this weekend.

Well, as usual, if I go to her place, somehow I manage to forget the time (or be forgotten by my parents) and stayed there longer than expected. After sending them back to their house, (we went to Sutera Harbour to meet the party planner), I wanted to head back to my parents' house. Then I realized, no one's home at that time, and I didn't switch the lights on. There's no way I'm going back to that house in that weather. Even if it's just 8 houses away. It's not that I was scared, (okay, I probably was.), but a dark empty house next to a half hectare (or is it acre? whichever smaller, i guess.) jungle can be intimidating.

Luckily I didn't went back and waited in Viv's because the situation turned from bad into worse. The electricity's out. Imagine me in the house, alone, in the dark, during stormy rain. I would probably have drive myself back to Viv's. I told Baba that I couldn't bear to drive myself back to the house. He told me just to wait there till the rain ease off. And he'll send me to campus tomorrow, instead. He doubt that the road to my campus isn't underwater yet. Turn out he was right. Because today, one of my classmate said she couldn't enter the campus due to the bridge to our campus was underwater. She had to come early morning today instead.

Anyway, I learn to play Black Jack from Feizal last night. The electric's out last night. We couldn't do anything else at his bachelor pad. So, with a few candles to light up the table, we played Black Jack. We as in, Feizal, Ika, Meldon, myself and Cerys. Yes, Cerys. My 9-years-old niece know how to play Black Jack. And even better than me. Oh, don't worry. We weren't gambling. We did play with chips, but they were worthless. Feizal couldn't possibly gamble with us. He may be fun, he's not THAT irresponsible. It was okay. I played a few rounds before I went back to my parents' house.

And today I woke up at 6 just to come here (campus). Darn.

Return

Hey fellas~~!!

Yes. I know it has been a while since I last updated my blog. A LONG while. Too long, don't you think? Well, I'm sorry. I've wanted to update my blog so much, but didn't have the time to do it. Or privacy. Nana, u know how I write.

When I was in KL 2 weeks ago, I tried. But everytime I type something, my brother Z will be sitting across the table, staring at me through the laptop (his Vaio). I can't write under that pressure. Yes, I get the irony, I can bowl in a national tournament, with people screaming and yelling, and the urge and hopes of your team for you to win, but not writing when my brother is sitting nearby.

As you may know, I've been absent from KK since.... well, was it 10th Nov? I can't recall exactly, but I think that's close enough. I don't really know how to tell you guys what I've been doing there, cause it has been a while since. Oh yeah, I went to the Scream Park, Sunway Lagoon with Intan, ZZ and Adi, A. Even at the entrance I start to clutch at ZZ, the doorkeeper was very charismatic and spooked us with his story. Inside, poor ZZ, I never let go of his arm, I grabbed them with both my hands all the time we were inside. It was awesomely spooky. All the effects. I never once screamed, but then again, I never scream when spooked. Just stood still. Anyway, since we are allowed to enter the place as much as we want with the ticket as long as we never leave the compound, we decided to re-enter. The second time we went in, we were playing tricks on the 'ghosts'. Every time the 'ghosts' tried to spook us, we either look bored or laugh at their faces. When a 'ghosts' went up to Intan's face and growl, Intan just said 'Eww, busuknya mulut'. Ha-ha. It was hilarious. There were lots more of what we did. But I couldn't possibly write them all here.

On the 19th of Nov, the whole family, excluding Intan, went to Bandung for holidays. Don't worry, she joined us on day 3 & 4, she missed the sight-seeing, but never the shopping spree. It was fun. First 3 days, we stayed at the mountain side, rented a cottage in a resort called 'Sapulidi'. No, I'm not kidding about the name of the place, but it was beautiful. I would really like to show the pictures here, but they are all in ZZ's camera. (His new gadget, still unable to unattach himself from it) But you can check some of it in my brother, Noer's facebook album. ZZ still haven't upload them yet. (I know, I myself have to wait for him, total bummer!)

Anyway, I rode an offroad go-kart!! Awesome!! We didn't plan to ride them, but we were touring in the hotspring area, and they offer offroad go-kart! Of course, me and my brothers insisted on riding them, even though we didn't bring any change of clothes and ZZ was wearing his only pair of jeans he brought. We couldn't ride all 3 at once. So, Noer and ZZ rode for 3 laps, the Jimmy and me for 3 laps, then me and Z for 3 laps. Each of us rode 6 laps. When I raced with ZZ, I hit the side and got stuck a few times. Ha-ha. It was hard to turn those things. Of course, all of us were covered in mud. Especially ZZ, who didn't even consider to hit the break or avoid when he was driving through a mud pool. It was fun-tastic! We wanted to ride the ATV next, but mum said no. Of course, mum's word is the unwritten law in our family. ZZ tried to convince mum otherwise, and surprisingly failed. (ZZ is mum's favorite). Lots of things happened in Bandung. Too bad I can't share them all.

On 23rd Nov, Noer and ZZ went back to KL, my parents and I went back to KK. However, the next day, I hop onto another flight to KL. And a bus to Perak. With the whole contingent of UiTM Sabah for Karisma (Karnival Sukan Antara Mahasiswa). Which is why I'm in a cybercafe, next to the Ampang Superbowl Ipoh. Today's the last day of the tournament, at least for bowling, and I didn't win anything. Bummer! I've missed my shot to win for Double, Single and Masters. Total bummer! I would've win if I trained instead of having fun in KL and Bandung. But you know what, I don't mind at all. Thou, my manager was disappointed. Very disappointed. But it wasn't like I didn't gave my opponents a good fight. If it wasn't my lack of stamina and health, yes, health, my tummy been giving me trouble all week, especially during the game! And I didn't even have the appetite to eat anything all week. So NOT me! Qeel, no appetite, not even pasta! I'm planning to see my doctor as soon as I'm back in KK.

OMG, how long has I been writing here?? I think I should end it here and now. I'll try to update more often. promise!
